The Tompkins County Legislature has approved a raise for Sheriff Derek Osborne shortly after he announced his intention to seek a second term in office. The salary has been increased to $132,118.20 per year, a 30% increase from the previous rate of $101,294 per year.
The salary increase passed by a vote of 8-6, according to the Ithaca Voice. Discussions over a salary increase came after salaries for Undersheriff and the office’s lieutenants were bumped to a slightly higher rate than the Tompkins County Sheriff position as of January 1, 2022.
This increase in compensation is both notable and contentious as such changes had never before been considered for an elected official prior to an upcoming election.
