Community rallies around families devastated by Macedon fire: Several pets lost in the blaze

There have been several updates after the devastating fire the destroyed a Macedon apartment building this week.

The intermediate school nearby the site of that blaze reopened on Wednesday. However, the six families that were displaced by the fire lost nearly everything- including pets.

“Anything that you can name that we asked for, shirt size, shoe sizes, everything that we needed we wrote down,” Alateishia Johnson told RochesterFirst.com of the outpouring of support. “They let us know that everything was coming in. They got my kids McDonald’s and pizza.”

All of the displaced families have been put up in an area hotel for the time being. They aren’t sure what comes next, but temporary housing will be available. “We have a super community,” Johnson added. “Everybody is Superman and Superwoman; we have a super community.”

Donations are still being accepted at the Palmyra Macedon Primary School for the families impacted by the fire.

A GoFundMe has been setup for the families devastated by fire. Physical donations are also being accepted at the primary school.

The fire, which remains under investigation, apparently began on the first floor. That according to victims of the fire, who recounted losing pets.

“I ran outside, looked and there were billowing flames. It was just engulfed, I can’t describe the sound,” Thomas Eberle told News10NBC. “I ran back in, grabbed my girlfriend, my son ran out the doorway and got burned along the way. I grabbed a couple pictures, and as I ran back, the ceiling collapsed. I dove back in. My cat. I couldn’t save him.”

Eberle lost three cats in the fire. Another resident, Heather Melhorn lost a 12-week old kitten in the fire.
