A survey conducted by the Community Housing Improvement Program has found that the Emergency Rental Assistance Program in the state of New York will likely need more funding.
The total amount for rent debt is $1.62 billion dollars just in New York City.
There are 123,000 residents that owe an average of $13,777 and only 40,000 renters have applied for assistance when 82,000 qualify.
182,528 people have applied for the program in the state and 71,237 were approved. 111,291 people are still waiting for approval and $1.2 billion has already been disbursed.
If this rate continues, the money will be depleted before everyone that qualifies is paid.
