Man airlifted after jumping from moving car on Rt. 14 in Phelps

The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office provided an update on the incident initially reported as a car vs. pedestrian crash in the town of Phelps on Sunday.

Around 3 p.m. deputies responded to Route 14 for the report of a male on the side of the highway with serious injuries.

While they did not identify those involved- deputies said in a news release that a 35-year-old Wayne County man was the front passenger of a vehicle traveling south- when he jumped out.

Deputies said he jumped out of the vehicle when it was traveling between 45-50 mph. Investigation revealed that the male and his girlfriend- who was driving- were in a verbal argument.

The man suffered serious head injuries and was airlifted by Mercy Flight to Strong Memorial Hospital. He remains in guarded condition in the Intensive Care Unit, according to deputies.

The sheriff’s office was assisted by New York State Police, Oaks Corners Fire Department, and Finger Lakes Ambulance.

Deputies say no charges are pending against the driver. Route 14 was closed at Packwood Road for an hour while the victim was treated and the incident investigated.
