Horseheads High School alum is featured by the Navy for work on the USS Vermont

The US Navy is featuring a Horseheads native for work he’s done aboard the USS Vermont.

The USS Vermont is one of the world’s most advanced nuclear-power submarines.

Petty Officer 2nd Dustin Whitesell is a graduate of Horseheads High School from the class of 2015. He enrolled in the Navy in 2017 after deciding his current job would not result in a career. He currently works as an electrician’s mate.

Whitesell says that his high school wrestling coaches words, “dreams don’t happen unless you make them happen” is the driving force behind his success in the Navy.

The USS Vermont is a fast-attack submarine, a stealthy submarine that operates underwater for long periods of time, operating undetected. The job of a fast-attack submarine is to hunt down and destroy enemy submarines, carry and deliver Navy SEALs, carry out intelligence and surveillance, and engage in mine warfare.

Whitesell explains that the Navy is one of the largest contributors to providing national defense due to their presence around the globe and willingness to provide aid wherever needed.

He adds that it is an honor to serve in the US Navy, and that he knows he is keeping his friends and family back home safe.
