Midlakes School District began a campaign to donate gently worn shoes and ended up with almost 450 pairs.
The campaign began as a way to teach empathy to students and understand “walking in someone else’s shoes.”
The movement began with Dean of Students Pete Czerkas and school counselor Anna Corrente, and once it began families started dropping off garbage bags of shoes. Families also reached out looking for shoes.
Midlakes’ chapter of the National Elementary Honor Society helped organize an event to manage the amount of shoes and hosted a two hour “Super Shoe Saturday” while people in need could discretely search for shoes.
