Watkins Glen graduation moved to Father’s Day after parents complain about schedule change

Graduation day in Watkins Glen has changed … again.

The Board of Education originally moved the ceremony from June 19 to June 26. Then after public outcry, the district decided to move the event to June 20, which is Father’s Day.

The initial change was made after Gov. Andrew Cuomo declared June 19, Juneteenth, an official public holiday in New York. The holiday, which commemorates the end of slavery in the U.S.

Parents voiced concern about the change due to the last-minute nature of it. Out of state family and friends of graduating students had already made plans, and finding available rentals was a challenge.

A survey was sent out to parents of graduating seniors- asking them to choose June 20 or June 26.
