The Buffalo Sabres skated into the third period on Tuesday all tied up after scoring a late second-period goal against the New York Rangers. However, the Rangers scored twice in the final frame to hand Buffalo a 3-1 loss at Madison Square Garden.
Sam Reinhart scored Buffalo’s lone goal and Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen made 38 saves in his second-career start.
Brendan Smith, Alexis Lafrenière and Mika Zibanejad scored for New York. Igor Shesterkin stopped 36 shots.
Buffalo’s power play finished 1-for-2 while the penalty kill went 2-for-3.
