Montgomery played in just three games with the Kansas City Royals last year and was with the Mets in Port St. Lucie this spring.
He had a 6.14 ERA over four games (one start) and 7.2 IP this spring, allowing 10 hits and five earned runs with nine strikeouts.
Montgomery won a World Series with the Chicago Cubs in 2016, getting the series-winning save in Game 7 against the Cleveland Indians.
In his last four seasons, he has appeared in 118 games while making 47 starts. As a starter, he owns a career 4.19 ERA, but his ERA as a reliever is over a run better (3.16).
