Local doctors are embracing the COVID-19 vaccine.
Dr. Gregory Heeb, chairman of medicine at Newark-Wayne Community Hospital was the first to receive the vaccine.
It’s part of regional and state leader’s efforts to lead by example in getting vaccinated.
“I’ve been here a long time, and even though I’m chair of the department I do a lot of clinical work in the intensive care unit and COVID area. That’s why I think I was number one,” Heeb told the Finger Lakes Times. “Part of this job is leadership, and that means leading the way. I was happy to do it.”
The first batch of vaccines were delivered by Pfizer. The Moderna vaccine has now received FDA approval, so it will become available in the coming weeks.
Frontline healthcare workers at Rochester Regional Health and UR Medicine facilities across the Finger Lakes have been receiving the vaccine. Nursing home workers and residents are next on the list.
FingerLakes1.com is the region’s leading all-digital news publication. The company was founded in 1998 and has been keeping residents informed for more than two decades. Have a lead? Send it to [email protected].
