The Canandaigua Police Department provided an update on the incident that occurred on Saturday around 1:30 p.m., which shut down a busy stretch of 5&20.
Officers responded to multiple 911 calls for a disturbance on Eastern Boulevard. While responding to the area, additional information was received that a male with a knife was chasing a female.
When an officer arrived on-scene and found the male suspect armed with an edged weapon – the officer engaged the male and gave him verbal commands to drop the weapon, according to a press release.
The male suspect did not comply and advanced on the officer. The officer then shot the suspect once.
Additional officers and deputies from the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office arrived on scene and began administering first aid to the suspect, as well as the female victim who had been stabbed multiple times by the man.
Both the suspect and victim were taken to Strong Memorial Hospital with what police said were non-life threatening injuries.
The Canandaigua Police Department requested that the New York State Police investigate the officer involved shooting. The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office also responded and assisted with the investigation.
Canandaigua EMS, Canandaigua Fire, Mercy Flight and members of the hospital staff at the Canandaigua Urgent Care and Thompson Health Center assisted with medical treatment at the scene for both individuals.
