How should graduation be handled? Parents, students petition for ceremonies in June, July

Should graduation ceremonies happen this spring or summer?

It’s been a hotspot for debate amid the Coronavirus Pandemic. Once New York State made the decision to not allow any additional in-person educating in the 2019-20 school year – focus moved to graduation ceremonies.

Will they happen? Can they happen? Those are the questions local school leaders are wrestling with.

Last week, South Seneca Superintendent Steve Zielinski said it was one of the major challenges that his administration was talking over. “We don’t know how we will handle that at this point,” he said at the time.

Now though, petitions have been popping up throughout the region for high schools and colleges to hold graduation ceremonies.

Some districts have discussed the concept of live-streaming graduation, but none have announced full-plans.
