On Thursday, Ontario County Public Health confirmed a total of three cases of the Novel Coronavirus, or COVID-19.
The first case was travel acquired. The second and third cases were community acquired.
One positive COVID-19 case is a student at the Canandaigua Middle School. Canandaigua School officials are aware. The student and family are currently under quarantine and being monitored by Ontario County Public Health. The teen is recovering and feeling better at this time. Ontario County Public Health is in the processes of completing contact investigations of both community acquired cases.
Due to the sheer number of people gathered in school settings, a case of COVID-19 in an Ontario County School district was expected at some point. All community members and families of the Canandaigua School district should be alert to COVID-19 symptoms such as cough, fever and shortness of breath.
“Our recommendations remain the same. Please continue social distancing. Staying home will help slow down the spread of COVID-19. Please remember, most people do NOT need to be tested,” public health officials said in a statement. “Only sick people who have severe symptoms or certain risk factors should be being tested. COVID-19 testing must be ordered by a healthcare provider. If you are sick, please STAY HOME.”
Most cases of COVID-19 are mild and can be managed at home, public health officials reassured.
Call your health care provider if you think you are too sick to stay home or if you have questions. Do not go to the hospital, urgent care center or doctor’s office without calling first. If you are very sick and need medical care, call your health care provider or emergency room before leaving your house if possible.
If help is needed immediately, call 9-1-1 and tell the dispatcher that you have COVID-19 symptoms.
