Police: Vehicle didn’t have appropriate emergency lights leading up to crash at busy SF intersection

Police say one person suffered minor injuries after a local first responder en route to a call missed a red light, causing an accident.

On Thursday at 5:43 p.m. the Town of Seneca Falls Police Department responded along with the Seneca Falls Fire Department and North Seneca Ambulance for personal injury crash at the intersection of State Route 414 and North Road.

A vehicle being operated by Joseph Zehr, 24, of Waterloo was northbound on State Route 414, according to police. Police say Zehr is a volunteer firefighter with the Junius Fire Department.

They report that Zehr was responding to a call when he failed to stop at a steady red signal and collided with a vehicle being operated by Louis C. Smith, 18, of Seneca Falls.

A passenger in Smith’s vehicle was transported to Geneva General Hospital with apparent minor injuries.

During the police investigation it was determined that Zehr’s vehicle was not correctly equipped with emergency equipment, only having one forward facing warning light. The vehicle did not have 360 warning lights nor did it have a siren as required by state law, according to police.

Both vehicle’s suffered extensive damage and were towed from the scene.

The case is still open and vehicle and traffic law charges are pending, according to police.
