Black Lives Matter Ithaca holds rally following Commons arrests

Black Lives Matter Ithaca and about 100 members of the community gathered on the Commons late Monday afternoon to rally against what they perceive as racism and police brutality.

On May 3, the City of Ithaca released 10 videos that showed an incident on the Commons between Ithaca Police Department officers, two suspects and a crowd of bystanders that resulted in three arrests on April 6.

The videos, accompanied by a statement from Mayor Svante Myrick, were released after being partially redacted to protect the identities of some involved parties.

“Immediately after the incident I asked to review this footage. I saw enough that worried me — so I ordered an internal investigation,” said Myrick in the Facebook post. “I can’t speak to the details of an ongoing investigation but I can tell you that if the outcome suggests wrongdoing we will take appropriate corrective action.”
