Rep. John Katko wants to establish cybersecurity advisory panel

A bill sponsored by U.S. Rep. John Katko aims to have leading cybersecurity experts from the private sector provide guidance to federal government agencies.

The legislation would establish the Cybersecurity Advisory Committee. The panel, which would consist of cybersecurity professionals employed by businesses, would advise the Department of Homeland Security and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency.

Katko, R-Camillus, sits on the House Homeland Security Committee and is ranking member of the Subcommittee on Cybersecurity, Infrastructure Protection and Innovation.

The creation of the cybersecurity advisory panel, Katko explained, will allow for dialogue between federal agencies and the private sector.
“I’m grateful for the support of our private partners for this initiative, including the National Technology Security Coalition, and I look forward to working with them to expand public-private engagement in cybersecurity,” he said.

Katko’s bill is cponsored by U.S. Rep. Dan Lipinski, an Illinois Democrat, and U.S. Reps. Brian Fitzpatrick and Dan Newhouse, both Republicans.
