The Auburn City Council will consider a resolution at its Thursday meeting to request an increase in the Arterial Highway Maintenance Reimbursement rate from the governor and state Legislature.
Since 1961, Auburn has been in an agreement with the New York State Department of Transportation to maintain and upkeep the city’s portion of the highway. The rates of state reimbursement, 85 cents per square yard and 95 cents for every elevated square yard of the highway, have not increased since 1987, despite rising maintenance costs.
Thirty-eight New York cities have maintenance agreements to combat pot holes and other road deterioration. Auburn Mayor Michael Quill has joined 34 other mayors by requesting Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the state Legislature to adjust the reimbursement rate to $1.87 per square yard.
Over 197,000 square yards of the Arterial highway lie in Auburn. Currently, the city gets reimbursed $167,642 a year for Arterial maintenance. Under a $1.87 reimbursement rate, Auburn could be reimbursed about $368,000.
