An official accident report on the deadly crash involving Syracuse men’s basketball Coach Jim Boeheim suggests issues with the car carrying the victim as well as “pedestrian error/confusion” contributed to the crash.
Onondaga County District Attorney Bill Fitzpatrick released the detailed report Thursday morning on the crash that killed Jorge Jimenez, 51, in February.
It concludes “Based on the totality of the circumstances surrounding this collision investigation, Boeheim’s operation of his motor vehicle was not reckless, unreasonable or with gross negligence, and no crimes were committed.”
On Wednesday, February 20 around 11:20 p.m. police say a car driven by Alberto Brinones hit a patch of ice and lost control near the Thompson Rd. exit on I-690 East.
The report says the car hit the guardrail and ended up disabled in the center and left lanes.
A woman driving by just 2 minutes later called 911 and told them she narrowly missed hitting the car, a black 2011 Dodge Charger with tinted windows. She said it was “like a deer jumping in front” of her.”
She swerved to the right, according to police, and told them another vehicle about seven car lengths behind her, later determined to be driven by Boeheim, swerved to the left. That’s when police say Boeheim hit Jimenez.
Boeheim told police he saw the car and tried to avoid hitting it.
