Snowplow strikes utility pole, taking down power lines in Niles

Nearly two miles of road in Southern Cayuga County was shut down for a period of time on Wednesday morning after a snowplow hit a utility pole – taking down power lines.

The Auburn Citizen reports that the accident happened before 8 a.m. involved a snowplow catching a pole and bringing the pole down, causing wires to fall across an 18-wheeler.

No injuries were reported, but Rockefeller Road was closed from Arnold Road to Duryea Street in Niles for National Grid to take care of the wires, dispatchers said.

Around 124 customers were without power. It was expected to be restored during the afternoon hours.

Throughout the rest of the county, dispatchers said, there had been few accidents despite icy conditions that prompted numerous closures by schools and community organizations. None of the accidents have been serious or resulted in serious injuries.
