Barn destroyed in Interlaken after late-night fire prompts heavy response from first responders

Multiple fire departments were called to the scene of a barn fire Wednesday night a little after 9:15 p.m.

Ovid, Interlaken, Lodi, Romulus, Trumansburg and Varick fire departments were initially called out to the scene; and Fayette covered for South Seneca as those departments battled the reported barn fire at 8061 Brokaw Road.

Witnesses said they saw smoke and flames coming from the barn; and dramatic photos showed the extent of the flames and subsequent damage.

The County’s hazmat team was requested at the scene, along with NYSEG for power concerns.

First responders reported seeing signs for pesticide storage, which prompted the call to the County hazmat team.

Approximately 35 minutes into the call – additional tankers from Varick, Hector, and Fayette were requested.

First responders tell us the scene was cleared around midnight.

The Ovid Fire Department was mourning the loss of one of their members, which prompted a ‘limited response’ from that volunteer organization. However, 25 members and auxiliary turned out to the fire on Brokaw Road.
