Cornell plans two online AI master’s programs for fall 2027

Cornell University will begin offering two online master’s degree programs in artificial intelligence in fall 2027, with separate paths for people who want to build the technology and professionals who want to apply it at work.

Both programs from the Cornell Ann S. Bowers College of Computing and Information Science will combine online coursework with short residential experiences, according to the college’s announcement.

The M.S. in artificial intelligence will emphasize the mathematical, computational and systems principles behind modern AI. Cornell describes it as a technical foundation for students interested in building and advancing AI technologies.

The M.S. in applied artificial intelligence will focus on using AI in professional settings. That program will not require previous programming or mathematics experience.

The applied track is intended to help professionals use emerging technologies to address problems, change workflows and develop applications across industries.

Programs target working professionals

Both degrees are designed for working professionals and will give students access to Cornell’s interdisciplinary AI research community, the college said.

Matt Wilkens, associate dean for education at Cornell Bowers, said professionals need both technical and practical AI skills, along with the ability to assess how the technology is developed, used and governed.

Cornell says students will engage with faculty and peers while learning to evaluate AI and lead its use responsibly in their fields.
