DEC officer frees deer tangled in hammock in East Islip

A state environmental conservation officer freed a buck trapped by a hammock and tree vines in an East Islip yard, according to an Oct. 20 Department of Environmental Conservation report.

Officer DeRose responded Sept. 29 to the Suffolk County residence and found the hammock wrapped tightly around one of the deer's antlers as the animal pulled against the vines.

DeRose decided that cutting the hammock or vines alone could leave the animal running with fabric over its face, DEC said.

Using a pole saw, the officer removed a large portion of the buck's right antlers to free it.

The exhausted deer ran into nearby woods and appeared unharmed, according to the department.
