Newark wins .9 million for North Main Street sidewalks, school crossing

The Village of Newark has been awarded $2.9 million for sidewalk and pedestrian improvements on North Main Street, including a crossing signal at Lincoln Elementary School. The funding is part of more than $97 million announced Wednesday for transportation projects across New York, according to a village release forwarded to FingerLakes1.

The award comes through the federal Transportation Alternatives Program, administered by the state Department of Transportation. It supports the village's planned North Main Street reconstruction; it does not mean construction is complete or that a start date has been set.

Newark outlined the broader corridor project earlier this month, including road, curb, sidewalk and utility work. The newly announced award specifically supports walking and pedestrian-safety improvements along the street near the elementary school.

Mayor Jonathan Taylor said the project is intended to make Newark more accessible to people who walk, bike or use mobility devices. He called the grant an investment in the village's continuing revitalization.

The statewide awards were made available through the Federal Highway Administration. The state said funded projects include safe routes to schools, sidewalks, pedestrian and bicycle safety improvements, transit access and trails.
