Lyons man charged with attempted rape after reported September attack

A Lyons man was charged with attempted first-degree rape and two other offenses Friday after a woman reported being attacked behind a Water Street business in September, the Wayne County Sheriff's Office said.

Rufus Hall was also charged with third-degree assault and obstruction of breathing. Deputies said the woman reported that Hall led her behind the business about 4 p.m. Sept. 5, then became physically aggressive as she tried to leave.

The sheriff's office alleged that Hall grabbed the woman, threw her to the ground, threatened her and choked her. She escaped with minor injuries, according to the release.

Deputies responded to a North Canal Street residence early Sept. 6 after receiving the sexual assault report. Hall was arrested Oct. 9 and taken to the Wayne County Jail.

He was arraigned Friday at 7 p.m. and is expected to appear in court again, the sheriff's office said. The release did not give the next court date.
