New York gas prices average .47 as autumn costs stay high

New York drivers were paying an average of $4.47 for a gallon of regular gasoline Thursday, Oct. 8, as AAA reported that national pump prices remained unusually high for fall.

The state's average was down about 1 cent from a week earlier but up about 15 cents from a month earlier, according to AAA's New York fuel-price data. The national average was $4.36, down 5 cents over the week. AAA said this was the first October with a national average above $4 a gallon.

Prices varied across central and western New York. AAA listed the Rochester-area average at $4.42 and the Syracuse-area average at $4.37. The Binghamton-area average was $4.48, while the Elmira-area average was $4.36. Those metropolitan figures are broader than any individual Finger Lakes county or station.

AAA said crude oil prices had risen above $90 a barrel after several days in the $80 range. Its Oct. 8 release also put the national average price of electricity at public EV charging stations at 41 cents per kilowatt-hour, down 1 cent from the previous week.

Fuel prices change daily and can differ substantially by location and station.
