Ithaca residents interested in a role in local decisions have until Nov. 1 to apply for openings on city boards and commissions. The volunteer bodies advise city officials and review policies and projects affecting the community.
The city announced the recruitment Wednesday and encouraged people with a range of backgrounds and experience to apply, including residents who have not previously served in city government. The city’s online application is the route identified in the announcement.
Current opportunities may include boards or commissions dealing with zoning, planning and development, sustainability and climate justice, landmark preservation, and community police relations. The release did not provide a seat count or a vacancy-by-vacancy list, so applicants should check the city’s boards and committees page for current availability.
Members contribute to discussions and recommendations on their board’s subject area. The announcement describes an advisory and review role; it does not say that every board or commission has the same powers or that an applicant will be appointed automatically.
Mayor Robert Cantelmo said community participation helps local government draw on residents’ ideas and lived experience. The city said it wants applicants from varied backgrounds and areas of expertise, rather than only people who have served before.
The city’s boards and committees page says it generally accepts applications on a rolling basis and that appointments can take a few months because Common Council meets once a month. The Nov. 1 date is the deadline specified for this recruitment announcement; the city did not say when appointments from this round would be made.
Residents can review openings on the boards and committees page and submit an application online. For questions about appointments, the city page directs people to the City Clerk’s Office at 607-274-6570, option 2.
