Hornellsville roundabout to open one lane Friday

Hornellsville roundabout to open one lane Friday

Drivers in Hornellsville will be able to use one lane of the new roundabout at State Route 36 and County Route 66, also known as Webbs Crossing Road, beginning at approximately 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9. The opening marks a traffic-pattern change at the Steuben County intersection, not completion of the project.

The New York State Department of Transportation said the roundabout’s outside lane will remain closed while crews install street lights. The agency expects the roundabout to be fully open by the end of November, although construction activity depends on the weather and the schedule could change.

The new arrangement will leave a single lane available through the intersection as the remaining work continues. DOT did not announce a complete closure of Route 36 or Webbs Crossing Road in this advisory, nor did it identify a formal detour for the partial opening.

Motorists should expect delays and may want to use another route if necessary, the department said. Drivers should check conditions before traveling through the area because work and access could change with weather.

The roundabout is part of the previously announced Hornell Gateway Corridor project. Friday’s advisory addresses the intersection’s next operating stage; it does not say the broader corridor project is complete.

DOT urged drivers to slow down and drive responsibly through the work zone. Speeding fines are doubled in work zones, and two or more work-zone speeding convictions can lead to a driver’s license suspension.
