A 67-year-old Clifton Springs man died Tuesday after falling from a fourth-floor apartment window while emergency responders were checking a report of fumes in his home, according to the Ontario County Sheriff's Office.
The man, identified by the Sheriff's Office as Bradley Young, was pronounced dead at Strong Memorial Hospital after Mercy Flight Central transported him from the Foster Block Apartments. The Sheriff's Office is investigating, and the New York attorney general's office has been contacted to review the response because a police officer was involved in the decision to force entry.
Young called the Ontario County 911 Center at 8:49 a.m. Tuesday from his apartment in the Village of Clifton Springs. He reported that fumes were filling the apartment and causing a headache, the Sheriff's Office said in a media release.
Clifton Springs and Manchester firefighters, Mercy Flight EMS and Clifton Springs Village Police were dispatched. When Young did not answer his door, responders forced it open to check on him and look for a possible hazard that could affect others in the building, the release said.
Responders saw Young go out the window as the door opened, according to the Sheriff's Office. He landed on a second-floor porch roof. Fire and EMS crews found him unresponsive and not breathing, began lifesaving efforts and requested air medical transport. Sheriff's deputies and a state trooper also responded to assist.
Firefighters later inspected the apartment and found no gas leak or other hazardous condition in or around the residence, the Sheriff's Office said. The release did not establish why Young went out the window.
The Monroe County Medical Examiner's Office will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death. The Sheriff's Office said it has taken the lead in the investigation, while the attorney general's office will conduct its own review.
