Walworth hosting emergency security drill with Ginna nuclear plant Tuesday

Residents may notice increased law enforcement and security activity around the Walworth Town Hall complex today as the town participates in an emergency preparedness exercise with the R.E. Ginna Clean Energy Center.

The exercise is the second of two Hostile-Action Based, or HAB, drills designed to test how nuclear power plants, local law enforcement and off-site agencies coordinate and respond to simulated security threats or armed attacks.

Town officials said the increased activity at Town Hall and the nearby lodge is part of the planned exercise and should not cause alarm.

The drill will use the lower-level parking lot at Walworth Town Hall and the lodge parking lot. Personnel will also use the Town Hall’s Main Meeting Room and interior spaces at the lodge.

HAB drills are intended to test emergency response procedures and coordination among the nuclear facility and outside agencies under a simulated hostile-action scenario.

The town is assisting the Ginna Clean Energy Center by providing facilities for Tuesday’s exercise. The plant is operated by Constellation.

Residents with questions can contact the Town of Walworth at (315) 986-1400.
