State releases footage from fatal Cayuta crash involving parole officer

New York's attorney general released security-camera footage Friday from a July collision in Cayuta that killed passenger Prasanna Atluri. The attorney general's office said the footage was obtained during its ongoing investigation of the July 5 crash involving a state parole officer.

Shortly before 5 a.m., the officer was driving to work near the intersection of Route 224 and Route 13 in the Schuyler County town when the officer's car collided with another vehicle. Atluri was a passenger in that vehicle; she was taken to a hospital and later pronounced dead, according to the office.

The Office of Special Investigation released video from two security cameras that captured the collision. The attorney general's office warns that the footage may be disturbing to viewers.

Under state law, the office assesses deaths in which a police or peace officer, including a corrections officer, may have caused a person's death through an act or omission. It conducts a full investigation when that initial assessment indicates the officer may have caused the death. The law applies whether the officer was on or off duty.

The office said releasing the footage does not express an opinion about anyone's guilt or innocence or whether criminal charges will be filed. The investigation remains ongoing.
