Spotted lanternflies are becoming more established in the Finger Lakes, with large numbers reported in downtown Ithaca, according to The Ithaca Voice.
The invasive insect has also been documented in Ovid, Geneva, Watkins Glen and some area vineyards.
Cornell specialists say the pest threatens grapevines, although only a few Tompkins County growers have needed to treat or monitor infestations and no New York vineyards have been lost to it.
Researchers say the tree of heaven helps lanternflies spread, but simply cutting the tree down can spur new growth that attracts more insects.
Residents can help limit the spread by checking vehicles for hitchhiking insects and reporting sightings outside Ithaca city limits.
