People preparing to become New York notaries can attend a four-hour, in-person workshop Nov. 20 at Cayuga Community College's Workforce Development Center in Auburn.
Alfred Piombino will lead the Friday session from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., according to a submitted release and the college's course registration page. The workshop costs $125, space is limited and advance registration is required.
The program will review a notary public's duties and responsibilities and prepare participants for the New York State law examination. Piombino said passing the exam alone does not fully prepare a person for the legal responsibilities of the appointment.
Participants will receive four sample examinations and answer keys for later study. The required textbook, Notary Public Handbook: A Guide for New York, is included in the course fee and will be distributed at the workshop.
The state examination will not be administered at the training event. The release says schedules for the state-run test will be provided to participants.
Piombino has taught notary courses at Cayuga and other New York colleges. The submitted release describes his decades of work researching and teaching notary law, but the event itself is a training session, not a licensing appointment.
The release says eligible Civil Service Employees Association members employed by the state may use a tuition benefit voucher for the course and may seek reimbursement for the state examination fee. Participants should confirm their benefit eligibility with the union before registering.
Parking is free and no permit is required. Registration information is available through Cayuga Community College, which can also be reached at 315-294-8841; the release says government agencies may use purchase orders.
