Visitors can learn how native plants support wildlife, then explore restored habitat along Onondaga Lake's West Shore Trail during an Oct. 24 program hosted by the Onondaga Lake Conservation Corps.
The two-hour event begins at 10 a.m. at the NYSDEC Onondaga Lake Visitor Center, 270 Restoration Way in Syracuse, according to an Audubon release. Registration is required, and space is limited.
Janet Allen of Habitat Gardening in Central New York will lead the first hour. Her presentation will cover how planting native species can create habitat for small creatures and how environmentally friendly landscaping practices can shape a healthier yard.
National Audubon Society and Onondaga Lake Conservation Corps volunteers will then lead a leisurely, one-hour walk along the West Shore Trail. Participants will visit the pollinator garden and restored habitats while looking for birds and other wildlife that depend on those areas.
Admission is $10 for adults and $7.50 for children. The program is sponsored by Honeywell, Parsons and Anchor QEA. Questions can be directed to 315-365-3588 or montezuma@audubon.org.
Habitat Gardening in Central New York is a chapter of Wild Ones that helps residents in Onondaga and neighboring Cayuga, Cortland, Oswego and Tompkins counties create native-plant habitat in their yards.
The conservation corps, founded in 2012, organizes volunteer restoration work in the Onondaga Lake watershed. Honeywell founded it with the Montezuma Audubon Center and Onondaga Audubon; it is now a National Audubon Society program.
