Cornell University President Michael Kotlikoff and classics professor Mike Fontaine will discuss candid speech and how leaders respond to dissent during a free online event Oct. 6. The interactive conversation runs from 1 to 2 p.m. EDT and is open to the public, but registration is required.
The event announcement from Cornell says the discussion will open this academic year's series for the university's Program on Freedom and Free Societies. Kotlikoff will moderate, and online audience members will be able to ask questions.
The eCornell Keynote, titled “How to Speak Freely: Ancient Wisdom for Candid Conversations and Courageous Leadership,” draws on Fontaine's new book, “How to Speak Freely: An Ancient Guide to Free Speech and Dissent.”
Fontaine said the challenge for leaders is whether they can tolerate speech they find uncomfortable or embarrassing. He said the ancient figures Socrates and Lucian offer different ways to examine the responsibilities of speakers and those who promise openness.
The online event is free, with advance registration required, according to Cornell.
