Cornell University professor emeritus Barry Strauss has received the U.S. Naval War College's 2026 Hattendorf Prize, an honor recognizing a career studying and writing about military history.
The Cornell Chronicle reported that Strauss received a bronze medal, a citation and $10,000 at a Sept. 9 event. The college awards the prize every two years for lifetime work in the field.
Strauss is the Bryce and Edith Bowmar Professor in Humanistic Studies Emeritus in Cornell's College of Arts and Sciences. He graduated from Cornell in 1974.
After accepting the award, Strauss delivered a lecture titled “Sea Power Today: Lessons from Greece and Rome.”
J. Ross Dancy, the Naval War College's associate provost for research, said Strauss has made military history accessible to a broad audience. Dancy said the college valued the opportunity to hear his perspective on sea power and the wars he has studied.
Strauss said he was honored to receive a prize from the Naval War College and one named for John Hattendorf, whom he described as a leading maritime historian. The award recognizes Strauss' body of work rather than a single publication or lecture.
