Parents and caregivers across the Finger Lakes will have several opportunities this week to have child safety seats checked for proper installation, with free events scheduled in Yates, Ontario, Seneca and Schuyler counties.
The first event is scheduled Tuesday, Sept. 22, in Penn Yan, where the Yates County Sheriff’s Office will hold a car seat check from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the west parking lot of the Penn Yan Moose Lodge, across from 301 E. Elm St. No appointment is necessary.
In Ontario County, a child safety seat inspection event is planned from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, at the Canandaigua Fire Department, 335 South Main St. The Canandaigua Police Department is promoting the event and says free inspections will be available throughout the four-hour period.
Another inspection event will take place the same day in Seneca Falls from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Seneca Falls Fire Department, 43 W. Bayard St.
Certified Child Passenger Safety technicians from the Seneca Falls Police Department, Waterloo Police Department, Seneca County Sheriff’s Office, New York State Police and Seneca County Health Department are expected to participate.
The Seneca Falls event is being held as part of National Child Passenger Safety Week. Organizers say technicians will check installation, fit and expiration dates, and families are asked to bring their child so the seat can be properly fitted. One free car seat per family may also be available for families in need while supplies last.
In Schuyler County, the Sheriff’s Office will offer car seat checks during the 15th annual Cruise In hosted by Choice Auto Glass. That event will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 26 at 6150 Route 13 in Cayuta.
The inspections are intended to help parents and caregivers identify installation problems and make sure children are secured properly for their age and size.
All four events are free.
