How to get more from a baseball or softball private lesson

The time a baseball or softball athlete spends with a coach in Canandaigua matters, but the real value of a private lesson appears in what happens before and after it.

Athletes who arrive with a clear question, remain engaged during instruction and repeat the assigned work afterward are more likely to retain an adjustment.

Practice Time Sports offers private baseball and softball instruction in Canandaigua. A little preparation can make each session more productive.

Arrive with one priority

Bring a short description of what the player is experiencing and what has been happening during games or practices.

The athlete may be struggling with timing, balance, contact, throwing mechanics or confidence. Giving the instructor one clear priority creates more time to observe, test and teach.

Tell the coach about pain, workload limitations or recent physical changes before activity begins.

Understand the purpose of each drill

Athletes should know what a drill is designed to address.

During the lesson, ask what the player should feel or notice when the movement is correct. Leave with one cue the athlete can repeat and one sign that the repetition was successful.

HitTrax data can support the lesson, but numbers should not distract from the session's main purpose.

Write down the practice plan

Before leaving, record the drill, the main cue and a suggested number of quality repetitions.

A short note on a phone is enough. Parents can also ask the athlete to explain the plan in their own words. If the player can teach the idea back, it is more likely to stick.

Repeat the assigned work while the instruction is fresh, but stop when fatigue changes the movement. Pitchers and throwers should follow an age-appropriate workload plan and communicate discomfort immediately.

Make the next lesson a continuation

At the next session, tell the coach what improved and what remained difficult. That feedback keeps instruction connected from one lesson to the next.

Members may also use included cage time, subject to booking and availability, to practice the plan between lessons.
