Stars, Stripes and Speed raises $1,500 for Schuyler emergency aid

A summer automotive event at Watkins Glen International raised $1,500 for Spirit of Schuyler, helping the volunteer nonprofit provide emergency financial assistance to Schuyler County residents.

The donation came from proceeds generated by parade laps during the Stars, Stripes and Speed event, which was organized with support from Hooked on Driving and 607 Motorsports.

The Independence Day celebration drew thousands of automotive enthusiasts and community members for a car show, on-track racing, drifting exhibitions, ride-alongs, parade laps, contests, vendors and live entertainment, according to Spirit of Schuyler.

Spirit of Schuyler President Tony Vickio said the contribution will support county residents when an unexpected emergency creates a financial burden.

The nonprofit provides short-term help to people who had been financially self-sustaining before an emergency, with assistance ranging from car repairs for families that depend on one vehicle to security deposits for residents forced to leave their homes unexpectedly.

Hooked on Driving offers high-performance driving experiences centered on instruction, safety and responsible driving, while locally based 607 Motorsports organizes events intended to connect the region’s automotive community.

Vickio thanked those organizations, the people who attended and Watkins Glen International for supporting the fundraiser and the nonprofit’s broader work.

The racetrack will also host Spirit of Schuyler’s annual fundraiser, The Gathering, on Saturday, Oct. 17, at the Glen Club.

Additional details about The Gathering will be announced later, according to the organization.
