The New York Mets couldn’t generate enough offense Wednesday night as four Baltimore home runs helped send them to a 7-1 loss at Citi Field in the final game of the series.
New York managed seven hits but scored its lone run in the fourth inning. Marcus Semien delivered an RBI single that brought home Jared Young, but the Mets couldn’t produce another big hit against former Met Chris Bassitt.
Baltimore wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. Pete Alonso, who received another standing ovation from the Citi Field crowd, opened the scoring with a solo home run against Xzavion Curry in the first inning.
The Orioles added two more runs in the second when former Mets prospect Jeremiah Jackson launched a two-run homer. Christian Encarnacion-Strand followed with another two-run shot in the third, and Samuel Basallo added a solo home run later in the inning to give Baltimore a commanding advantage.
Curry was forced into the starting role after Robert Stock was placed on the injured list. The right-hander struggled in his opportunity, surrendering six runs on six hits and one walk while recording only nine outs.
New York’s bullpen provided a much-needed lift after Curry’s departure. Jefrey Yan, recalled Wednesday after Daniel Duarte was placed on the injured list, retired all nine batters he faced over three perfect innings. Jack Weisenburger also worked two scoreless innings before allowing a run during his third and final frame.
BILLS GAME WEEK: Buffalo opens new Highmark Stadium Thursday night against Lions (preview) Bassitt, meanwhile, turned in one of his strongest outings of the season. The right-hander worked 6 2/3 innings, matching his season high, while allowing one run on five hits and one walk with six strikeouts.
A.J. Ewing was the only Mets player with multiple hits, finishing 2-for-4 with two singles. Francisco Lindor went 1-for-4 with two strikeouts and remained one home run shy of 300 for his career.
The Mets now turn their attention to a four-game series against Philadelphia beginning Thursday. First pitch is scheduled for 7:15 p.m., with Nolan McLean scheduled to start against Aaron Nola.
