No. 14 Hobart soccer remained perfect Tuesday afternoon, getting a late goal from senior Quinn Phillips to defeat Brockport 2-1 on A. Huntley Parker Jr. Field and improve to 6-0-0 for the first time since 2011.
BILLS GAME WEEK: Buffalo opens new Highmark Stadium Thursday night against Lions (preview) Phillips broke the tie in the 85th minute, scoring his second goal of the season on a free kick from the top of the penalty arc. His low attempt found its way underneath the Brockport wall and past goalkeeper AJ Nelson to give the Statesmen the decisive advantage.
Hobart controlled much of the match offensively, finishing with a 14-6 advantage in shots. The Statesmen also turned in a strong defensive effort after halftime, holding Brockport without a shot during the final 45 minutes.
Weldon Arner opened the scoring in the 22nd minute when he headed home a cross from Griffin Coutts following Hobart’s only corner kick of the afternoon. It was the first collegiate goal for Arner, while Coutts extended his point streak to six consecutive games with the assist.
Brockport answered just before halftime. Khadim Amar collected a bouncing ball inside the penalty area and chipped a shot over Jake Hans in the 44th minute to send the teams into halftime tied.
Hans finished with three saves for Hobart, while Nelson made six saves for Brockport.
Coutts continued his impressive start to the season with another assist, giving him eight on the year. He entered the match leading the nation in assists and assists per game and moved into a tie for eighth on Hobart’s single-season assists list.
Hobart now turns its attention to Liberty League play, opening conference competition Saturday, September 19, at St. Lawrence. The match is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Sandy MacAllaster Field.
