The New York Yankees closed out this year’s Subway Series with a 2-0 victory over the Mets on Sunday, improving to 86-63 while finishing a 5-1 homestand. The Mets fell to 69-80 as the two teams split their six meetings this season, with each club winning all three games on its home field.
Cam Schlittler once again strengthened his case among baseball’s top pitchers, tossing six scoreless innings while allowing just one hit and striking out eight. He walked two, generated 15 swings and misses and threw 60 of his 94 pitches for strikes, lowering his season earned run average to 1.95.
Schlittler’s outing ended with a scare in the sixth inning. Bo Bichette hit a hard comebacker that struck Schlittler around the back of his right knee for the final out of the inning. He immediately left for the clubhouse and did not return for the seventh, with Brent Headrick taking over. Manager Aaron Boone told reporters postgame that Schlittler took the line drive “pretty good” off his hamstring but expects him to be okay.
The Yankees gave Schlittler all the offense he needed with solo home runs from Ben Rice and Austin Wells. Rice opened the bottom of the first inning by sending a Christian Scott pitch over the right-field wall for his 38th home run of the season. Wells added a 392-foot blast into the second deck in right field during the third inning, snapping an 0-for-20 stretch.
Scott matched Schlittler for much of the afternoon, allowing only the two home runs and three hits over six innings. He struck out seven and walked two in his first career Subway Series start.
The Yankees bullpen protected the lead with scoreless innings from Headrick, Paul Blackburn and David Bednar, who recorded his 34th save.
The Mets begin a three-game home series against the Baltimore Orioles on Monday at 7:10 p.m., while the Yankees open a three-game road series against the Minnesota Twins at 7:40 p.m.
