State Senator Jeremy Cooney will host his fifth annual free summer community barbecue Saturday in Rochester. The event will feature free food, entertainment, children's activities and more than 40 resource vendors.
The event is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 12 at the church, 141 Adams St. It is open to all members of the community, and organizers said no admission will be charged.
Food will be provided by Pop Style International, Big Daddy BBQ, Just Chick'n and Netsins Ice Cream. WDKX and community performers are scheduled to provide entertainment during the afternoon.
Family activities will include a giant bounce house, face painting, giveaways and games from the YMCA. The Seneca Park Zoo's ZooMobile is also scheduled to take part.
More than 40 community resource vendors are expected. Cooney's office said the group will include government agencies, law enforcement, Rochester Gas and Electric and local nonprofit organizations.
The barbecue typically draws between 500 and 1,000 Rochester-area residents each year, according to the senator's office. Organizers described the gathering as open to all and intended to connect residents with community groups and public resources while offering a free afternoon event.
Cooney, a Rochester Democrat representing the state Senate's 56th District, is hosting the event with community partners. The advisory did not identify all participating partner organizations or provide a rain plan.
Members of the media seeking to interview Cooney were invited to arrive at noon. The public event begins at 11 a.m. and continues through 3 p.m.
