Syracuse men’s soccer responded to a narrow loss against Clemson by scoring five unanswered goals Wednesday night, cruising past St. John’s 5-0 at SU Soccer Stadium.
The Orange improved to 4-2-0 overall and 1-0-0 in Atlantic Coast Conference play with a dominant performance on both ends of the field. Syracuse outshot the Red Storm 24-12, including a 13-5 advantage in shots on goal, and held an 11-4 edge in corner kicks.
Sachiel Ming opened the scoring in the eighth minute, giving Syracuse an early lead. Pedro Gulli doubled the advantage in the 33rd minute after taking a pass from Jordan Grey, and Kristjan Fortier added another goal in the 42nd minute to send the Orange into halftime with a 3-0 lead.
Syracuse continued to apply pressure after the break. Dakota Jonke scored in the 73rd minute after receiving a feed from Landon Darko, who then added a goal of his own less than five minutes later. Dominic Bell and Ming assisted on Darko’s tally.
Darko finished with one goal and two assists to lead all players with four points. Ming added a goal and an assist, while Gulli, Fortier and Jonke each scored once. Jordan Grey also recorded an assist.
Juan Martinez-Bastidas made five saves to preserve the shutout for Syracuse. The Red Storm managed 12 shots but could not find the net as the Orange defense kept St. John’s scoreless throughout the match.
The Orange now hit the road for another conference matchup Saturday, September 12, when they visit Boston College in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
