U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand is renewing her call to repeal 50% tariffs on Canadian goods as retaliatory Canadian tariffs on American products take effect.
Gillibrand said the trade dispute will raise costs for New York families and small businesses and urged Congress to pass legislation she introduced last month.
The New York Democrat's Banning Antiquated Duties and Delivering Equitable American Levies Act would repeal tariffs imposed under Section 338 of the Tariff Act.
The bill, known as the BAD DEAL Act, would also refund duties Americans have already paid under that authority, including duties tied to the latest Canadian tariffs.
Gillibrand called for the Trump administration to return to negotiations with Canada and reach an agreement aimed at lowering costs.
Her statement came as Canada began applying 50% retaliatory tariffs to American goods. The release did not list the affected products or provide estimates of the economic impact in New York.
Gillibrand has opposed the administration's tariffs since they were announced. She said prior tariff actions have increased prices for New Yorkers and argued that Congress should end the policy.
The senator's release cited public opposition to the tariffs but did not identify individual polls or include a response from the White House.
