Cornell University's College of Arts and Sciences has created a teaching professor title to recognize lecturers and senior lecturers whose work centers on instruction, advising and academic service.
College leaders said the designation is intended to recognize teaching-focused faculty and help Cornell compete with peer institutions in recruitment and retention.
Peter John Loewen, dean of Arts and Sciences, said the title acknowledges faculty members who have made teaching and advising central to their careers.
The college also expanded the Sophie Washburn French Instructorship into an annual award for pedagogical excellence among teaching professors. Two recipients will each receive $5,000 every year.
Raissa V. Krivitsky, a teaching professor in comparative literature, said teaching-focused faculty also contribute research, scholarship and other intellectual work to the university.
Brenda Schertz, coordinator of Cornell's American Sign Language and Deaf Studies Program, is among the faculty members using the full teaching professor title.
