Hobart and William Smith Colleges will host a campus ceremony Friday marking the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks and honoring three alumni who were killed at the World Trade Center.
“A Space for Remembrance and Hope: A 9/11 Observance” will begin at 8 a.m. Sept. 11 in St. John's Chapel. Members of the HWS community can attend.
Campus service will focus on remembrance
The Rev. Nita Byrd, HWS chaplain and dean for spiritual engagement, will lead the observance. Provost and Dean of Faculty Sarah Kirk will introduce history professor Matthew Crow, chair of the Law and Society Program.
Crow's reflection, titled “Something Else Besides Fear,” will consider how communities respond to tragedy and uncertainty. Crow began college during the week of the 2001 attacks and has focused his academic work on American democracy, law, political thought and U.S. history.
President Mark Gearan will remember Andrew H. Golkin, a 1993 Hobart graduate; Scott W. Rohner, a 2001 Hobart graduate; and Michael J. Simon, a 1983 Hobart graduate. All three worked for Cantor Fitzgerald and were killed in the attacks on the World Trade Center.
All three alumni studied economics at Hobart. Golkin was active in Kappa Sigma, the Inter-fraternity Council and the International Business Club, while Simon was a member of Theta Delta Chi.
A memorial plaque dedicated to the three alumni is located at the Abbe Center for Jewish Life.
Members of the Kappa Alpha Society will continue a campus tradition by placing 2,977 flags on the Quad, one for each person killed in the Sept. 11 attacks.
Geneva ceremony planned at Lakefront Park
HWS students, faculty and staff are also invited to join the City of Geneva's annual remembrance ceremony at 10 a.m. Friday at the 9/11 Memorial and Long Pier Pavilion in Lakefront Park, 47 Lakefront Drive.
The city ceremony is being presented with the Geneva Fire and Police departments and local emergency medical services. It will also commemorate the 25th anniversary of the attacks.
The two observances are among the events planned in Geneva to remember those who died and to recognize the first responders who answered the attacks.
