William Smith soccer’s matchup with No. 7 Washington and Lee took nearly two days to complete, but the Herons ultimately came up short, 3-1, Sunday morning in a weather-delayed non-conference contest at Watt Field.
The Herons fell to 2-1-0 after the Generals finished off the victory following a lengthy suspension caused by severe weather. The game began Friday, September 4, at 5 p.m., but a lightning delay with 20:37 remaining in the opening half eventually led the teams to suspend play following a two-hour weather delay. The contest resumed Sunday at 9:30 a.m.
Washington and Lee struck twice during Friday’s action, with Megan Zimmerman scoring both goals. She opened the scoring in the fourth minute by heading Avery Hannah’s cross past William Smith goalkeeper Antonia Goerke.
Zimmerman struck again in the 19th minute, finishing a bouncing ball across the goal line following a corner kick that was set up by Elizabeth Zimmerman.
Goerke kept the Herons within striking distance, making three saves during the final 20 minutes of Friday’s first half and finishing with six saves overall.
William Smith cut into the deficit in the 60th minute when Kristin Middaugh worked around a defender and fired a shot from the top of the penalty area into the lower-right corner. The goal gave the Herons an opportunity to pull even, but Lily Pryzwansky’s attempt in the 66th minute was stopped by Washington and Lee goalkeeper Kate McEnroe.
The Generals added an insurance goal in the 76th minute when Sydney Valentine redirected a cross from Cara Duggan into the net.
Washington and Lee finished with a 21-11 advantage in shots on goal and held a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.
William Smith will return to action Sunday, September 13, when it hosts Carnegie Mellon at 11 a.m. as part of Alumnae Weekend.
