An unidentified passerby broke a vehicle window and helped a trapped driver escape a fire Sunday morning in Ithaca, police said.
The driver was not injured in the fire, which was reported at about 8:07 a.m. Sept. 6 in the 300 block of North Fulton Street, according to the Ithaca Police Department.
Police and the Ithaca Fire Department responded after receiving a report that a vehicle was on fire with occupants still inside.
Investigators determined the driver was the vehicle's only occupant and had been trapped before the passerby broke the front passenger-side window and pulled the driver out ahead of emergency crews' arrival.
The driver told police the vehicle began smoking before it quickly caught fire. The cause remained unknown Sunday.
The 300 block of North Fulton Street was closed to through traffic for about 40 minutes while crews worked at the scene.
