The Ontario County Sheriff's Office is urging drivers to slow down and watch for children and school buses as students return to classrooms for the new academic year.
The start of school brings regular bus stops back to neighborhoods across the county, along with more students walking and biking and heavier traffic near school buildings during morning arrival and afternoon dismissal, the office said.
Drivers should leave extra time for their commute, reduce speed in and around school zones and be prepared for children who may enter or cross a roadway unexpectedly. The sheriff's office also urged motorists to avoid distractions and pay particular attention near bus stops, crosswalks, intersections and school entrances.
Motorists must stop when a school bus displays flashing red lights and should never try to pass a stopped bus while those lights are active, according to the office.
The sheriff's office said additional deputies will be on patrol, with increased visibility in and around school zones. The added patrols are intended to encourage safe driving and protect students as the school year begins.
“Back-to-school season brings a noticeable change to our roads, particularly during the morning and afternoon hours,” Sheriff David Cirencione said. “We are asking everyone to slow down, put the distractions away, watch carefully for school buses and children, and give themselves a little extra time.”
Cirencione said a few extra seconds of patience can make a difference in keeping students safe.
Parents and caregivers are also encouraged to review pedestrian and bus safety with children before they travel to and from school. The office recommends that students use designated crossings whenever possible, look carefully before entering a roadway and wait for the school bus in a safe location away from traffic.
The reminder applies throughout Ontario County as families, teachers, school employees and school resource officers begin the academic year.
