Ontario County residents will have an opportunity later this month to learn how to spot scams, protect their personal information and respond if they become victims of financial abuse.
The Ontario County S.A.L.T. Council will host “Scams & ID Theft: What You Need to Know” at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30, at the Town of Canandaigua Building, 5440 Routes 5 & 20. The presentation will focus on current scams and identity theft trends, prevention strategies and steps people can take after experiencing financial abuse.
Michaela Leach, an Ontario County Office for the Aging specialist, and Ontario County Sheriff’s Sgt. Missy Peck will lead the discussion.
The S.A.L.T. Council — Seniors And Lawmen Together — brings together older adults and representatives from the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office, Office for the Aging, Quail Summit and Alzheimer’s Association. Its work focuses on education and safety issues affecting older residents, including fraud and scam prevention.
The Sept. 30 program comes as the county continues a broader public education effort aimed at helping older adults recognize increasingly sophisticated fraud attempts and avoid disclosing personal or financial information.
